Hoedown at the Harvest Festival14/03/2012
It hardly seems like a week ago that I was hobnobbing it down at the 6th annual Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival in Gladstone, sampling wines and nibbles on blistering beautiful sunshine filled day. With four bands playing off the side of a truck, nine eateries and 16 vineyards it was always going to be a humdinger of a day out for the sold-out 2200 revellers in the crowd.
My favourite tipple on the day was a 2009 Chardonnay ‘Emily’ from Cottier Estate – a brilliant drop. However the best food to munch on I thought was from Pete Icke, originally a Geordie lad but now the Head Chef at Gladstone Vineyard Café who cooked up Greytown pork ‘snarlers’ with agria puree and pinot’d onions matched with a Gladstone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010. He told me later that he did around 500 servings on the day – wow.
So mark the date in your calendars for early March 2013 and head on down to the Wairarapa and be entertained riverside under the shade of 600-1000 year old totaras and kahikateas – a magical place and setting for one of the best food and wine festivals in New Zealand!
