Hell’s Canyon – A Snake River Shower!

Hell’s Canyon – A Snake River Shower!

After a night spent in the town of Riggins, a place with nice hotel, one Main Street, a few cafes, one liquor store that doubles as a fishing tackle shop, and just two bars. I arrived at Killgore Adventures HQ for my 60-minute shuttle van transfer to Pittsburg Landing on the banks of the Snake River. This is what they call Hells Canyon, a 32-mile upstream journey up to the Snake River Dam. It’s not called Hells Canyon for nothing, in springtime the river is full of Class III and Class IV and the odd Class V white water rapids. Today there were a few Class III and two Class IV Rapids to negotiate. Kilgore’s Jetboat had a roofed in canopy opened above the front seats. With three, 315 horsepower diesel engines it blasted its way forward like a torpedo. With just 13 people on board it made for a spectacular ride . . . as you can see from the photographs I took from the bank of the boat doing a nosedive in the Bernard Rapid before the catapult exit strategy . . . it was one hell of a ride!
