Queen Victoria Market is famed as one of Melbourne’s most iconic culinary attractions, with its abundance of fresh produce, popular ‘foodie tour’ and an acclaimed cooking school on-site.

Lesser known is the market’s general merchandise section, a vast space that sells everything from men’s and women’s clothing, homewares and accessories to jewellery, health and beauty products.

Here are some of our top picks:

Upmarket Menswear – Upmarket Menswear is a place where a gentleman can suit up and still have spare change for martinis later. Here you will find shirts, jackets, ties, suits and even cashmere coats at a fraction of the retail price. Owner Jim Vouloumanos buys excess or discontinued stock direct from manufacturers who supply major retailers.

Madame Pompadour – A place where Marie Antoinette chic meets Moulin Rouge style, Madame Pompadour is a girly treasure trove selling French and vintage inspired fashion, accessories and homewares. Luxe, lacy, floral and feathery creations abound including gorgeous camisoles, dresses, jewellery, quilts, chandelier lamps, teacups, cushions, aprons, frames and even cupcake stands.

Queen Victoria MarketRewine – Innovative merchant Rewine offers premium wine at a discounted rate straight from the barrel. It’s a system that is not only economical but is environmentally friendly too. Owners Marshall Waters and his wife Janet buy wine in bulk direct from boutique local wineries and then offer it straight from the barrels onsite at the market. Wine is poured from the barrels into reusable glass bottles, with a discount offered with each refill. The whole system runs under nitrogen to keep the wines super fresh.

House of Mojo – House of Mojo is the public face of a 25-year-old import/export operation specialising in one-of-a-kind furniture made from recycled wood. Vintage and antique furniture is restored and repurposed by artisans in House of Mojo’s warehouse in Jaipur, India, and then shipped to Australia to be sold at Queen Vic market and their Footscray warehouse. A favoured purchasing spot for architects, builders and interior decorators, House of Mojo also produces pieces for export, which are sold to retailers and international trade fairs in the UK, Italy, Germany and New Zealand.

Market Espresso and Trolley Hire – Conveniently located near the market’s main car park, the recently opened Market Espresso café is a place where you can take away a cup of coffee and a shopping trolley at the same time. Ethically and sustainably produced Di Bella coffee is ground fresh on site, with eight different varieties of coffee bean blends available including organic and Rainforest Alliance. You can also try French pastries, homemade cakes and a broad range of biscotti. Plus, shopping trolleys are available to hire for $5.
