The Cook Islands… Best Of The Best Places To Stay
01/09/2025Tucked away in the heart of the South Pacific, the Cook Islands is a tropical paradise that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture and warm island hospitality.
Consisting of 15 islands scattered over a vast ocean expanse, this small, yet enchanting, neighbouring nation is often described as one of the Pacific’s best-kept secrets. From the turquoise lagoons of Aitutaki to the lush green mountains of Rarotonga, every corner of the Cook Islands invites travellers to slow down, breathe deeply and experience life at a different pace.
What sets the Cook Islands apart is its unspoiled charm and authentic cultural experiences. Unlike other heavily commercialised tourist destinations, these islands maintain a deep connection to their Polynesian roots. Visitors can explore traditional villages, enjoy rhythmic drum dances and witness the age-old art of tivaevae (quilt-making).
The islands are ideal for couples seeking romance, adventurers craving natural wonders or families in search of a safe and welcoming getaway. Snorkelling in crystal-clear lagoons, hiking jungle trails, dining on fresh seafood or simply relaxing under swaying palms, there’s something for every type of traveller.
With its postcard-perfect scenery and genuine island spirit, the Cook Islands offers more than just a vacation, it offers a chance to reconnect with nature, culture and simplicity. Whether for a week or a lifetime of memories, the Cook Islands is a destination worth discovering.
Let’s Travel travelled to The Cooks recently to stay at two of our favourite properties…Nautilus Resort and Manuia Beach Resort. Along with these two excellent places to stay we will also showcase here a variety of other accommodation options for you to choose from when you next head to ‘Raro’.
Nautilus Resort:
Nautilus Resort Rarotonga is a 4.5 star elegant resort, which offers an idyllic blend of luxury, privacy and an authentic Polynesian charm, making it an exceptional choice for travellers seeking a tranquil escape in the Cook Islands.
Nestled on the pristine sands of Muri Beach, this resort features 18 elegantly appointed Are’s (villas), each designed to harmonise with the natural beauty of the island.
Nautilus is an eco-friendly boutique beachfront resort set against a beautiful mountain backdrop, which melts into a crystal lagoon and showcases the highest level of premium luxury accommodation available in the Cook Islands.
With all villas including a private saltwater plunge pool, and the tropical palm studded Ta’akoka Islet enhancing the breath-taking lagoon view, you will feel totally immersed in this Polynesian experience.
A Sanctuary of Comfort & Style:
The resort’s villas are spacious and thoughtfully designed, ranging from one-bedroom suites to expansive three-bedroom beachfront villas. Each boasts a private saltwater plunge pool, a furnished deck with sun loungers and a tropical garden courtyard.
Inside, guests will find luxurious amenities including a Californian king bed, a deluxe bathroom with a standalone stone bath and separate rain shower, air conditioning, ceiling fans and a fully equipped kitchenette or full kitchen in select units.
Entertainment options include a 64” smart TV, in-house movies and complimentary Wi-Fi (there is a daily data allowance). The interiors are adorned with natural finishes and high ceilings, reflective of the resort’s Polynesian-inspired design.
A Pacific Inspired Culinary Journey:
Dining at Nautilus Resort is a highlight of the stay (understatement in my humble opinion), with the award-winning Nautilus Restaurant offering a refined Polynesian- European fusion menu.
The restaurant emphasises the use of fresh, locally grown and organic ingredients, many sourced from the resort’s own garden. Guests can enjoy meals in the main dining area or opt for a more casual al fresco experience on the spacious patio overlooking the lagoon and infinity pool.
The menu is inspired by the diverse cultures of the Pacific region, featuring exciting taste combinations that showcase the best of Polynesian cuisine. Breakfast is served daily from 7.30am, with lunch and dinner options available throughout the day. For those seeking privacy, in-room dining is also available, allowing guests to enjoy meals on their private deck or by their plunge pool.
Additional Amenities & Experiences:
Beyond the luxurious accommodations and exquisite dining, Nautilus Resort offers a range of amenities to enhance the guest experience. The resort features a Polynesian-inspired spa offering holistic treatments, massages and beauty services. I lost my wife in that spa for 60 minutes. “Pure unadulterated luxury”…her words!
For those seeking adventure, activities such as snorkelling and paddle- boarding are available, allowing guests to explore the vibrant marine life of Rarotonga’s favourite lagoon.
Whether you’re lounging by your private plunge pool, savouring gourmet meals with ocean views or indulging in a spa treatment, Nautilus Resort Rarotonga provides an unforgettable tropical retreat that captures the essence of island luxury.

Manuia Beach Resort:
Managed by ex-pat Kiwi, Ross McLauchlan, Manuia Beach Resort is an adults-only boutique resort, right on the beach in Arorangi, on the sunset (western side) of the island. Manuia Beach Resort is located just 15 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from the main town of Avarua.
The Resort is perfect for couples and mature travellers seeking tranquility with an authentic Polynesian charm, and combines traditional island aesthetics with modern comforts, creating a serene and romantic atmosphere.
The Resort comprises 25 well appointed suites, including a two bedroom apartment. The suites are in 12 ground floor duplexes and feature air conditioning, ceiling fans, have splitable, plush Sleepyhead kingsized beds, along with fully discreet outdoor showers and private verandahs. The Beachfront Suites offer direct views of the lagoon and reef, providing an unparallelled setting for relaxation.
Manuia Beach Resort features an award-winning restaurant and bar, OTB – ‘On The Beach’. The restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is the perfect place to view the whales passing during whale season (July till October).
On the Beach restaurant is set on a sand-floor terrace overlooking the lagoon, and directly adjacent to the resort’s exquisite pool. Guests can enjoy a variety of Polynesian-inspired dishes, with highlights including a Sunday BBQ featuring a live band (well worth it) and a Wednesday night Island Experience with traditional cooking demonstrations and a fire dance show.
Included in your stay are complimentary transfers to and from the airport, daily complimentary tropical breakfast, free unlimited wifi and the use of kayaks, snorkelling gear and reef shoes. When we stayed earlier this year every single one of the staff were attentive, without being in your way, and extremely willing to assist in whatever we needed…usually another cocktail…or two!
Even though we ate each night at OTB, there are a number of good local restaurants, a short walk along the beach in both directions. For something different Island Platters deliver a variety of their delicious platters directly to the resort.
Manuia offers a range of complimentary activities to enhance your stay. Guests can participate in a free introductory scuba diving session, explore the lagoon with provided snorkelling gear or enjoy kayaking and mountain biking. For those seeking relaxation, a beachfront Polynesian massage is available every Thursday.
Whether you’re lounging by the infinity pool, savouring a cocktail at sunset, or immersing yourself in local culture, Manuia Beach Resort offers a memorable and rejuvenating experience. Its combination of authentic Polynesian charm, modern amenities and tranquil setting makes it a standout choice for those seeking a peaceful getaway in the Cook Islands.
