With the risk of conditions such as DVT, it is important to take your flight wellbeing seriously. Wear clothing that isn’t restrictive and walk around as much as you can. Drink plenty of water throughout the flight and avoid alcohol. There are several exercises you can do to prevent DVT.

Arrange flight transfers before you travel. Avoid waiting around for cabs at the airport, especially if it’s late. Ensure someone is waiting for you or there is an airport shuttle.

Make sure the hotel receptionist doesn’t reveal your room number if people are standing around. Ask them to keep this private. Ask for a room upstairs. Rooms on the lower floors are easier to break into from outside.
Always use the hotel’s safe to store valuable items. When you leave the hotel, take a little cash with you. Keep this with you at all times. In a worst case scenario, such as your bag being stolen, you will have enough to get you back to the hotel. Always ensure you have some change in case you need to make an emergency phone call. Don’t rely fully on your cell phone.
Wherever possible, join other people. Groups are less likely to be targeted than lone travelers.
When you’re away from home, there’s a temptation to eat as though you’re on vacation. This is fine in moderation. But if you’re a frequent traveler you could be getting into unhealthy habits. There are several ways you can eat healthily during business trips:
- Don’t go for a big breakfast just because it’s there. Select food you would eat at home.
- Don’t be tempted by the ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet. Eat sensible portions and don’t load your plate.
- When eating at restaurants avoid side orders.

- For lunches opt for salads instead of loaded sandwiches.
- Don’t drink your calories. Replace sugary drinks with water.
- Keep an eye on your caffeine intake.
- Opt for grilled or steamed fish and meat, rather than fried options.
- Go easy on sauces and dips.
- Don’t be tempted by the bread plate.
Take full advantage of hotel amenities. Find out what’s on offer in advance. Take your gym kit if you have use of a gym. Many hotels have swimming pools and so make sure you take your swimsuit.
If you don’t have access to a pool or gym, you can still work out. Exercises like yoga can be practiced anywhere. Make time in your schedule to go for a walk or a run.
Working away from home doesn’t have to be an unhealthy experience. You can take steps to look after your health and wellbeing. This is particularly important if you travel regularly. You can also take care of yourself by taking added precautions when traveling alone.
