Nine Nelson, Edinburgh30/06/2014
With one of the most desirable and stylish addresses in Edinburgh, Nine Nelson, a stunningly refurbished Georgian apartment, is set to become the city’s most sought after luxury self-catering accommodation when it opens its doors this month.
Centrally located on Nelson Street, a tranquil cobbled street surrounded by elegant townhouses and spacious communal gardens in the heart of Edinburgh’s ‘New Town’ (a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its neoclassical and Georgian period architecture), the four bedroom property offers a relaxing hideaway just a short stroll from many of the city’s main attractions such as Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and medieval Old Town.
Spread over two floors with striking period features, Nine Nelson exudes charm from the moment one opens the front door. Greeted by a magnificent entrance with flag stone floors and a grand winding staircase, the apartment impresses with high ceilings, extensive picture windows and luxuriously large rooms bathed in natural light. Complementing the historic framework, lovingly sourced vintage pieces cleverly sit alongside modern furniture and artwork by Scottish and international artists to create a relaxed and contemporary ambience with every conceivable luxury.
Painstakingly restored by its Edinburgh and Australian born owners, Keith and Kate McIntosh, over a two year period, Kate commented on the experience that they wanted to create for their guests: “Nine Nelson offers a special slice of Edinburgh’s history with its period architecture and prestigious setting. In restoring the property, we were keen to highlight its exceptional features whilst offering guests a luxurious space where they could totally relax and immerse themselves in the surrounds. Our aim was to make any stay as memorable as possible by combining the best of 5 star luxury with the convenience of being in an extremely well-equipped home. As a professional chef, I wouldn’t be without a food processor or good knives, so it makes sense to find these things in the kitchen at Nine Nelson. It’s the small touches that often make all the difference to a holiday so we are hoping to have captured this for our guests.”
Similarly attractive to friends and families and suitable for accommodating up to 9 people (7 adults + 2 children*), the apartment is divided between living and entertaining on the First Floor with sleeping arrangements on the Second.
On the First Floor, a superbly appointed sleek open plan kitchen/diner – featuring a large oak table, Miele appliances, American style fridge freezer plus wine fridge, Nespresso machine, an excellent array of professional quality kitchen equipment and freshly stocked larder full of essentials – provides the perfect gathering point for a family breakfast or entertaining in the evening. Adjacent, with its large comfortable couches, open fireplace and stunning Murano chandelier, the living room offers the perfect haven to unwind with friends or curl up with a book and a tipple of Scotch in front of the fire. In addition, younger members of the family can head to the Rumpus Room to entertain themselves with books, games and toys or take a nap on the cosy custom built single bed within handy earshot of the kitchen and lounge.
Upstairs, the Second Floor opens up to a choice of two extremely spacious double ‘Master’ bedrooms with ‘superking’ sized beds and a twin bedroom. Evoking calm and tastefully decorated with curtains and artworks by the Scottish design duo Timorous Beasties, Master Bedroom 1 benefits from its own modern en suite bathroom with under floor heating, steam-free mirror and monsoon showerhead. Equally elegant and ‘the room with a view’, Master Bedroom 2 has two stunning floor-to-ceiling windows and lovely vintage cocktail chairs from which to drink in the Georgian architecture. Next to Master Bedroom 1, the comfortably inviting twin room includes trundle beds making it ideal for two adults or four children. An exquisite, generously sized, family bathroom completes the floor with gorgeous features such as floor to ceiling shuttered windows, freestanding Victoria + Albert bath, twin sink, walk-in shower, thick fluffy towels and luxurious Aesop toiletries.
Ensuring that guests get to make the most of their stay, Nine Nelson supplies a comprehensive welcome pack on booking (including Keith and Kate’s insider tips on restaurants, cafes and favourite spots) and offers a highly personalised concierge service to ‘meet and greet’ with 24 hours on call contact to assist with any queries. In addition to tailor-making any special requests, the property also offers numerous ‘little extras’ including picnic rugs to take to the spectacular residents-only Queens Street gardens, a selection of children’s wellies for muddy walks, bespoke grocery shopping for the larder, the option of a chef for in-house dining and the services of a qualified child-minder. Other great family features include melamine dinnerware, travel cot, high chair, potty, steriliser, folding buggy/pram and plenty of games and toys to suit all ages.
With Edinburgh boasting a wide selection of events throughout the year, ranging from the Military Tattoo and International Festival in August, Ryder Cup Golf in September, international rugby matches in November to Hogmanay in December,
Nine Nelson offers an outstanding stay no matter the time of year.
