The Nile & The Original African Queen19/06/2013
From David Livingstone to Joanna Lumley and the boys from Top Gear, the Nile has an enduring appeal for inquisitive travellers. Venture Co is offering aspiring adventurers the chance to tackle this legendary river in an entirely new way, aboard Bogart’s African Queen.
Based on CS Forester’s book, the 1951 classic film The African Queen starred Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Now thanks to Nile explorer and Joanna Lumley guide, Cameron Mcleay, the boat used to film the scenes near Murchison Falls in Uganda has been restored and returned to the Nile, ready to set sail once more.
The adventure begins with a visit to Mcleay’s newly opened Wildwaters Lodge. Located on a pristine private island in the middle of the Nile, about 25 minutes downstream from Lake Victoria, the lodge has been three years in the planning and construction. The ten timber rooms are nestled amidst the forest canopy with breath taking views over the river and its rapids. Each canvas-walled, thatched room boasts a private deck with free-standing bath. Whether rounding off a gorilla safari or simply tackling the Nile, Wildwaters is the ideal African base fit for a queen.
Thrill seekers can sample the ‘menu’ of white water rafting trips, operated from the lodge. There is also jet-boating, the huge ‘Nile High’ bungee jump and a variety of wave-boarding activities.
A sunset steam cruise aboard the African Queen will transport guests upstream along a beautiful section of river punctuated by heavily forested islands and bordered by huge rapids, stepping back into a bygone era.
A wild long weekend on the Nile costs from £1,999 per person with Venture Co including return flights with BA from London to Entebbe, three nights full board accommodation at Wildwaters Lodge, drinks, road transfers in Uganda, sundowner cruise on the Africa Queen, full day white water rafting on the Nile and a visit to N’gamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary on Lake Victoria prior to returning to the UK.
