Why? Because of the extensive variety of what there is to do in the region? Yes! Because of it’s proximity to bigger travel hubs? Yes! Auckland and Tauranga to name two. And, most recently, it’s link with the ‘outside world’ with direct flights from Australia reinstated after too long an absence by the friendly people at Jetstar Airways!
The Waikato has some of the most diverse attractions in the country and we shine the light on the main ones in this issue along with regional destinations within The mighty Waikato region; plus, to make your stay that little bit longer, a focus on the places to stay.
No longer is The Waikato an area on the map for you to drive through to get to another destination. Believe me, I know the heart and soul of this region…even though I only moved here eight years ago!

Waikato Museum: On the banks of the Waikato River, in the heart of the Hamilton cultural precinct, Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery provides a rich experience of the arts and culture of Hamilton and the Waikato region.
Perched above the mighty Waikato River, this world-class museum and art gallery is the artistic and cultural heart of the Waikato. Visit and experience visual stories and guided activities that bring art, history, culture and science to life through an inspirational programme that aims to challenge and inspire visitors.
Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery offers a wide range of exhibitions, special events and even a kids’ zone, Exscite (nominal admission cost). It is an interactive centre for discovery with a hands-on space where children can play and learn through tactile and immersive surroundings. You’ll find something to inspire the whole family here at the Waikato’s largest regional museum and art gallery.
Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery preserves and cares for more than 30,000 objects. Discover some of the incredible treasures, which are held in their visual arts, social history, tangata whenua and science collections.
Admission: Open from 10am to 5pm every day (except 25 December) entry is free.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari: Maungatautari Ecological Island Reserve is the largest ecological ‘island’ on mainland New Zealand. A haven for native wildlife and plants such as kiwi, kokako, tuatara and more, Maungatautari also provides great walking and hiking tracks.
The Southern Enclosure: offers five walks varying from 30 minutes to two hours and provides some of the best bird watching opportunities on the mountain. The walks feature a bird feeding area where visitors can watch the kaka and other birds as they come to feed, view weta boxes and climb the Canopy Tower which takes visitors 16 metres up into the treetops of the forest canopy.
Guided Walks: Day and after-dark night walks are also on offer by appointment. Learn all about the Sanctuary Mountain project and the history of Maungatautari with a guided tour of the Southern Enclosure. Guided tours provide the opportunity to learn about indigenous plants, the numerous bird species that call the mountain home, plus much more. A guided nighttime walk will open up a completely different world of this ancient forest. Tours allow visitors to see curtains of glowworms, native crayfish, weta and listen for the call of the Kiwi.
The Northern Enclosure: is a smaller section but is of great significance as this area is where the conservation work started. Walks in the Northern Enclosure take around 30 minutes to one hour, showcasing some of the different fauna growing on the mountain and picturesque forest streams. There is also the Te Ara Tirohia Loop Track (meaning the viewing platform), which is 1.1kms long.
Walk over the Mountain: this is recommended for experienced trampers and will take most of the day (5-6 hours). For those suitably equipped this trek provides great views from Pukeatua Peak. If you are not familiar with the mountain it is advised that you seek advice before attempting this trek.

Te Awa River Ride: The scenic route weaves through rural and urban landscapes, taking in waterfalls and historic Maori sites as well as trendy shops and cafés.
Bike riders can take in the full beauty of the Waikato River with a two-hour cycle journey from Hamilton Gardens all the way to Ngāruawāhia and between Cambridge and Lake Karapiro. The track is primarily wide, smooth and largely flat making Te Awa suitable for cyclists of all fitness and experience levels. The full trail stretches along the Waikato River, from Ngaruawahia in the north to Karapiro in the south.
